Space Packing Architecture: the Life and Work of Alfred Neumann is the first-ever exhibition on the work of Alfred Neumann (1900–1968). Active in Israel in the 1960s, Neumann’s highly original architecture stands apart from the canon of International Style Modernism from this time: eschewing functionalist and orthogonal expressions, Neumann opted instead for polyhedral geometries that blended traditional architectural principles with new modes of expression. Through a unique display of his most renowned built works, this exhibition brings to light Neumann’s expressive architecture and design methodology. It will tell a story about Neumann’s architecture through various means, and will bring together never-before-seen photographs, architectural drawings, and large- and small-scale models fabricated especially for the show. Four life-size spatial modules, taken directly from Neumann’s most renowned projects, will be built at full scale in the gallery, where visitors can walk among them and experience for themselves an authentic impression of Neumann’s architectural geometries and spaces. Small-scale architectural models of these same buildings in their entirety will provide context for the life-size spatial modules, and will demonstrate how Neumann worked harmoniously among scales and elements to create unifi ed patterns in his designs. In addition an account of Neumann’s life will be presented through personal correspondences, photographs, paintings, and sketches. The exhibition balances historical documentation with reconstructed architectural elements in space to provide both an informative account of Neumann’s architecture and allow for a real, embodied experience of it. Unveiling Neumann’s work provides insight into the creative power of a highly individual architect and thinker who developed and relentlessly pursued a unique architectural language, despite confronting much resistance and hardship over his lifetime. Neumann’s contribution to the theory and practice of architecture in the middle of the twentieth century, has yet to be fully comprehended; this show is a fi rst step in doing so.

Příprava výstavy a vznik publikace si vyžádaly nemalé prostředky a velké úsilí.

It is quite possible that architect Alfred Neumann would have became the most famous “Czech” modern  architectural designer and theorist, if the epoch in which he lived and worked wasn’t so complicated and didn’t so  often and precipitously change his destiny. His theory, vision and professional successes faded gradually into obscurity. Now, we partially reveal his geniality and, with distance of some decades, can understand his importance and position in the history of modern art.

This exhibition on Alfred Neumann opened in Ostrava in a world premiere, to later move to other cities in the Czech Republic and abroad (Wrocław, Weimar, Brno, Paris, Tel Aviv, Montreal and New York). It draws attention not only to Neumann’s work but also to his intricate destiny in a time of extreme intolerance to the origin and divergent individual views.

The preparation of this exhibition and catalogue has claimed considerable resources and great effort. There is no example of such volume of exhibits and archives from more countries concentrated here to show, for the first time, the personality and work of Alfred Neumann in an adequate extent, so comprehensive and, moreover, in a context of creative conceivers of his time. It will be a source of inspiration for a contemporary generation of creators.

Both the exhibition and catalogue are results of the cooperative efforts among the Cabinet of Architecture and Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava (GVUO), Rafi Segal and his exhibition team from the Massachusetts Institute  of Technology (MIT), architect Zvi Hecker from Berlin, and the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław (MAW). Additionally, this project could not have been realized without the support of further related institutions, private partners, and other individuals enchanted with this theme. We thank them all greatly for their professional cooperation, new experience and revealing adventure.

Alfred Neumann a Československo

V roce 1947 reprezentoval Československo na šestém srazu Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) v anglickém Bridgwateru mimojiné s prezentací urbanistických studií Prahy, Zlína a Ostravy.

Svými teoriemi ovlivnil celou generaci architektů a umělců, a stále inspiruje i ty současné.
